Former LOS President and BSG Member John Dillon will provide the program:

“How I Birdscaped my Yard”

In 2013, John Dillon bought his house and un-landscaped his two-acre lot in Athens in rural Claiborne Parish and began converting the property into bird habitat. His payoff for the hard work is that he currently has 163 bird species on his yard list, his yard is listed as an eBird Hot Spot, and it has well over 100 native plant species. John is a familiar face to most BSG members. He served as LOS President from 2019-2021, currently serves as Past-President and currently LOS Newsletter Editor. He has been on the Louisiana Bird Records Committee for about 12 years. He is the main eBird reviewer for North Louisiana and is an eBird Hot Spot editor. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Briarwood Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve. In 2007, John also began the Minden High School Nature Club at Minden High where he teaches English and received the Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s “Conservation Educator of the Year” Award in 2022. The BSG is an annual financial supporter of the Nature Club.

The program is free and open to the public.

"Let no one tell you again that science is only for specialists; it is not. It is no different from history or good talk or reading a novel; some people do it better and some worse; some make a life's work of it; but it is within the reach of everybody."
