35. 5273HA
Many of us bus enthusiasts who worked for the Midland Red were rather dismayed when, instead of putting the Company's own design D10 into production, they chose instead to go to the Daimler Company in Coventry for the next batch of double deckers. The economics of the situation and the difficulty of retaining sufficient coachbuilding staff at Carlyle Works would have been lost on a teenager like myself at the time. However the DD11 was the 'writing on the wall' for Company vehicle production. Here we see 5273, 5273HA, parked on Birchall Street awaiting its next turn of duty soon after delivery. 5273 was barely two months old at the date of this picture and was a Daimler Fleetline CRG6 with Alexander 77 seat bodywork.

Politics often played a part in decision making at Municipal Bus Undertakings. Local politicians were instinctively inclined to favour local industries that provided jobs and prosperity for local people. It was no surprise, therefore, that Coventry Corporation (and later Coventry City Transport) was fiercely loyal to the locally built Daimler buses, throughout its existence. It famously created a local furore when, in 1964, its first rear-engined double deckers emerged as Leyland Atlanteans. It mattered not a jot that they were the PDR1/2 model, incorporating Daimler transmission parts under licence.
